Diagnostic value of carcinoembryonic antigen in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of peripheral lung cancer.

767 centesis yielded 2,000 ml of bloody fluid which was positive for malignant mesothelial cells. Needle biopsy ofthe pleura confirmed the diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma. On bronchoscopy the right side was normal, but a lesion in the left upper lobe was found which yielded the diagnosis ofsmall cell carcinoma of lung. Treatment with chemotherapy and radiation resulted in resolution ofthe s...

Differential diagnostic value of plasma cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether the demonstration of plasma cells (PC), which are normally absent in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid, facilitates differentiation among pulmonary disorders. Initial BAL fluid samples of 1,260 patients were analyzed. In 83 of these, PC were found. Of these 83, 47 were obtained from individuals suffering from extrinsic allergic alveolitis (EAA)....

Comparative assessment of the diagnostic value of transbronchial lung biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology in lung cancer.

BACKGROUND This study was designed to determine the accuracy of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid cytology (BAL) using histopathologic examination of transbronchial biopsy specimens as the gold standard in diagnosis of lung carcinoma at our center. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was conducted to investigate a total of 388 patients who were suspected of having lung cancer and had under...

Vitreous lavage fluid and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid have equal diagnostic value in sarcoidosis

Here, we elucidate the immunological features of both bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and vitreous lavage fluid (VLF) samples from patients with histopathologically verified sarcoidosis. In addition, we assess the safety of vitrectomy in sarcoidosis patients by investigating the occurrence of complications and the recovery of visual acuity.Twenty-two eyes of 22 patients with tissue-proven s...

Diagnostic Value of sTREM-1 in Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid in ICU Patients With Bacterial Lung Infections: A Bivariate Meta-Analysis

BACKGROUND The serum soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells-1 (sTREM-1) is a useful biomarker in differentiating bacterial infections from others. However, the diagnostic value of sTREM-1 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) in lung infections has not been well established. We performed a meta-analysis to assess the accuracy of sTREM-1 in BALF for diagnosis of bacterial lung i...
